Flat Stanley and Nels's Parents Visit

As mentioned previously, our nephew Ethan sent us Flat Stanley.  Nels's parents came down to visit too.  So we toured Memphis together.  Here's the report I gave to Ethan of Flat Stanley's visit.  Hope you enjoy! :)

Stanley wanted to see a few sites in Memphis so we toured around and visited three places. Uncle Nels’s parents (Bob and Donna) were visiting also so Stanley took some pictures with them too.

Our first stop was to the historic Peabody Hotel. This 10+ story hotel is extravagant, but it’s most well-known for the ducks that swim in the fountain inside the hotel. The ducks march in and out of the fountain on a red carpet at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. Stanley quacked with the ducks in the fountain and they became good friends. Stanley even got to meet the Duckmaster. The Duckmaster patiently trains the ducks to waddle down the red carpet and into the fountain. When the ducks aren’t in the fountain they live in water on the roof of the hotel! So they go up and down the elevator. Stanley thought that was funny and exclaimed, “Ducks riding an elevator!”

Stanley, like the ducks, had fun riding the elevator too. We went all the way to the top and walked on the flat roof. Stanley could see all of Memphis from this high up! He saw the huge Peabody sign, the Fedex Forum (where the Memphis Grizzlies play basketball), the bridge that crosses the Mississippi river and really tall buildings!

Everywhere we went, everyone knew Stanley! He was so famous! People would stop and say, “Oh, Flat Stanley is visiting you! How fun!” or “I know Flat Stanley—Hi there.” Stanley enjoyed the attention. :)

After the hotel we made our way down to the Gibson Guitar factory and store. Music is a big part of Memphis history and culture. Gibson guitars have been played by many famous people—some are even from Memphis like BB King and Elvis Presley. Inside the factory was a guitar two stories tall! The store had a lot of different colored guitars. Stanley liked the bright blue one. To help Stanley remember the cool guitars he bought a Gibson guitar pick.
Outside the Gibson Guitar factory/store.

Donna holding Stanley next to his favorite blue guitar. He thought the black and white swirl one was cool too.
As we walked down the street we saw BB Kings Club and we passed a huge sign with one of the Memphis Grizzlie players on it. The Grizzlies play the Utah Jazz on Sat. April 14, but Stanley had to be home before the game. Maybe next time he’ll be able to catch a game.

Our last tourist stop was the Mississippi River. Stanley was amazed at how wide and huge the river is. The Mississippi River is over 2,000 miles long and goes through 10 states. It’s one of the longest rivers in North America! You can often see steamboats and barges going up and down the river. Stanley thought it would be fun to swim in, but it’s a little cold. So he just pretended.

Stanley was surprised to see a pyramid too!

Next time Stanley comes we’ll have to visit Elvis Presley’s house and some of the many museums in Memphis. Maybe Stanley will even bring Ethan with him! We would love to see the sites with our wonderful nephew. Thanks for sending Stanley to us.

Love,

Aunt Becky and Uncle Nels

Rocks and Mulch

At the beginning of spring Nels and his nice boss put rocks around all of the landscaping and filled it up with mulch.  It made a huge difference, to us anyways.  I'm so glad we did it!
I didn't get a before shot because I was gone when they started.  So this is an "in process" shot.  You can see the rocks and then mulch has been spread in around the first bush.
Here's a bed with mulch and no rocks yet.
Nels getting rocks.
Ewww.  Nels got really dirty.  Look at the dirt!  But a perfect smile. :)
Nels carefully placing the rocks.
All done.

Random:  We finally got blinds for our front door window!  I don't know why it took us so long.  We thought they would be super expensive, but it ended up being around $80.  Awesome!  We got them from Blinds.com.  They sent us samples for free so we could match our door color. Then we measured the window and ordered.  Simple, inexpensive and now you can't see into our house.  Below the blinds are open though, but the glass is reflecting...not the best picture.  Anyways, we love them!
Other random outdoor item...Last year my co-workers gave me a lily plant.  I kept it indoors until there were bugs.  So I planted it outside thinking it would be happier.  Well, it immediately died.  I forgot about it until in the spring, it started to grow again.  I was so happy.  It's beautiful!

That's all for outdoor improvements this year. :)

Memphis BBQ Co.

The last night my parents were here we went to Memphis Barbecue Co.  We had not been there yet, so it was adventure for everyone.  We all really liked this bbq place.  I'll give it a thumbs up!  I got the Idaho potato with pulled pork.  Who knew Memphis and Idaho would make such a great recipe! haha.

Here's a few pictures.
Sweet parents by the sign.
They give pork rinds (I think that's what they are called) at the beginning.  I didn't care for them. It was my first time trying them, so maybe I'll like it better next time.
Lots of awards.  I think it's funny how the trophies have pigs on top.

The food:  My parents got the platter of all the different meats.  It looks delicious!  I think they enjoyed it.
My sweet nephew Ethan sent us Flat Stanley to tour Memphis.  He had just arrived, so we took him to Memphis Barbecue with us.

Good times!

The Washer Game

So what was this jigsaw for?  We, well I, really wanted a washer game.  My grandpa has one.  We would always play it at his house and at family reunions.  I love this game.  So my Dad and Nels were kind enough to spend a lot of time making one for me.  They did an awesome job!!  And the jigsaw worked great! :)

We didn't have a saw table (now we do...just a little late for the project), so we improvised and used a camping table.  (Thanks mom and dad Nyborg for the camping table and sorry for using it for this purpose.  It cleaned up nicely, though.)

Here's a few pictures of the process:

Nels with his jigsaw.  Cutting circles.

Dad tossing a bag of ice in the hole.  We were so excited we just used ice bags to try it out.  Later we got the washers.  In the corner Nels is gluing the carpet on.
Here's the finished product:
Thank you Hilton for donating carpet samples for this project. :)  The washers are 3 1/2 inches in diameter and the holes are 4 inches.  The washers can be painted any color.
Nels wanted something bright, so neon orange and yellow with 2 white ones.

So this is how you play:
The Washer Game

Set Up
Place boards about 10 ft apart. The distance can vary depending on the age/skill of participants.
For four players, divide into two teams. One member of each team stands on opposite sides.
Each team has 4 colored washers and 1 white washer.

Playing the Game
Ethel and Rebecca are on a team and Nels and Fred are on a team.
Rebecca and Nels stand on one side, Fred and Ethel on the other.

Rebecca tosses all 5 washers, and then Nels tosses all 5 of his washers. If Rebecca’s washer stays on the board and Nels knocks it in then Rebecca gets the points. Ethel and Fred pick up the washers and toss them. The next time Nels tosses first and then Rebecca. Say the score at the beginning of each round.

Scoring
Top two holes—2 pts.
Middle hole—3 pts.
Bottom two holes—1 pt.

White washer—double the points

Winning the Game
The first team to score 21 points exactly wins. If you go over 21 points you go back to 11 points.

When Nels's parents came to visit we played this game several times.  Here's Nels and his Mom playing.
I love this game.  I love it when I come from behind and win the game by tossing the white washer in the middle hole for 6 points!  It's just an awesome feeling. haha!

Thanks Nels and Dad for making this wonderful Washer Game for me!!!

Finding out about twins

Mom and I were sewing and talking away, when my phone rang.  I answered and to my surprise it was Dr. Kutteh calling.  It was Friday (March 23rd) and after 5 p.m.  I thought it was odd that he would be calling me after hours and on a Friday.  But he started out with, "I just wanted to call and congratulate you on your pregnancy."  "Thank you," I replied.  Then he went over my blood tests, giving the numbers, and then he asked, "now how many embryos did we transfer?"  I said, "two."  "That's what I thought, I just want you to be prepared, there may be more than one that implanted.  Your blood tests indicate that this is a strong possibility.  Please tell your husband to be prepared for twins."  My heart was racing, twins?!  Oh, my.  We really didn't think that was going to happen.  My mom heard bits and pieces, so she was just grinning.  When I got off the phone, I told her "Dr. Kutteh thinks we're expecting twins."  She squealed with delight and I think I was just in shock.  :)

Nels and my Dad were gone shopping for a jigsaw.  We needed a jigsaw for a project they were going to work on together.  I didn't want to tell Nels over the phone.  So mom called my Dad and said, "Are you almost done?  We're getting hungry.  Hurry home so we can eat."  :)  (I like to end paragraphs with smiley faces, haha.)

I knew when Nels came home he would be too excited about his jigsaw to listen to the news.  So I waited semi-patiently for him to tell me about his jigsaw.  I didn't realize my mom was sitting on the bar stool snapping pictures with her iPhone...but I'm glad she did.  I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. :)

Nels proudly showing his jigsaw.

And that's how Nels found out we were having twins.  :)
The end.
